Jen Shyu’s Nine Doors, a solo ritual music drama, integrates narrative, singing, movement and instrumentals on the Taiwanese moon lute, gayageum, piano and electronics. The work was inspired by a tragic accident, as it imagines one surviver’s mythical encounters with powerful female legends. The drama reflects the parallels that exist between life and death, different cultures, and the importance of empathy over destructive assumptions that divide humanity. This performance kicks off the 2018 season of First Fridays series at the Providence Music Mansion. $10 Donation
